The trouble with old yachts is they have little and major headaches that come along to keep you on your toes

One of the minor problems that is taking a while to sort itself out is a slow leak up aft where the stern post fits the planks.Different materials swelling at different rates.

A job for the spring when the weather is better is cleaning the underside of the deck and replacing the old forehatch.

One major problem that as come up since the mast as gone up a fracture in the deck beam ahead of the mast step. 

This is going to be a pain to replace, However until next winter it will be possible to repair and strengthen up to see us through the sailing season this year.

This photo show the extent of the problem, however will shore it up and glue and bolt together and make a brace to support through the season and then remove the beam over the following winter.

The yacht getting to the final stages after a long journey this year, worth it in the end.

Sasha the mascot surfacing to inspect the work since he last was on the yacht earlier in the year. 

He seen a lot of differences to the yacht and it is feeling more homely now that many of the bits of the equipment is now back in place

One of the last major jobs to do in the New Year the cockpit getting the new seats in place and getting the Samson posts in the back corners and the finally get the manual bilge pipe run sorted and connected up to the skin fitting.

The bunk all cleared to sort out the trims to go back on now the major work in the cabin as been finished

It's good to get to this stage and the long cold and wet days now a distant memory

Setting out the local area chart to plan our first trial sail once the final jobs are done on the yacht in the New Year.

Finally got the mast up on the yacht.

Today we finally got the mast up on the yacht and over the next few days will get it set up up ready to go for a trial sail after Christmas. The rigging will have to be tensioned up for a while so that the rigging wire and the fittings get sorted and the adjustments to the tension can be made once the rig as settled down.

So over the next few days the sails will be bend on to the spars and adjustments will be made where necessary and any modifications made to the sails. So that next year when the yacht get recommissioned it will be ready to go sailing and racing for the first time in a long time in the Old Gaffers Races that she used to race in many years ago.

One of the many things that is going to be done over the winter on the better days is to go sailing and train up new racing crew for the new racing season.

But first we have to get the yacht sorted out and get on with has many of the jobs remaining on the To do List.

Fits well in the space set aside for it, Now just got to find some space to fit the extra charts for the cruising next year.

Sorting jobs back at the workshop

Like with any yacht restoration there are days when there is a need to do some work in the workshop and get some jobs done there.
One being the forehatch of  Mai-Star II which is in need of replacing after giving many years of service, but getting little past its best.


The main cabin washboards getting a fresh coat of undercoat x 2 before getting painted with White gloss to finish them off. 


The two front blocks for the cockpit coamings getting modified so that they fit the cabin to coaming joint.


The next job will be to sort out the cabin bunk locker bases which need sorting so that the storage area under the bunks can be used to its best.

Another fruitful day getting jobs done on the yacht

The first of the new reefing line brackets 


The mainsail bend on to the boom so that the new reefing brackets can be set up and the line can be made up to fit and then position and fit the new oak cleats can be fitted at the front end of the boom.


Putting the cockpit coaming in position, so once they are finally fixed in place the Samson posts can be fitted and that will tire the back corner together.   


The three parts to the coamings now fitted in position just the Samson posts to fit once the front end blocks are made to fit.

A busy day's work on Mai-Star II

The navigation station now looking like it is also ready to see action with all the necessary bits of equipment in place, The VHF and LW/FM radio the GPS and the Log/echo sounder and the handheld VHF. All that is missing is the Chart Table which is being varnished and when finished will be put into position.


The GPS outside position as well as the log/ echo sounder bracket so that both bits of equipment can be used in both positions when needed.


The cockpit coamings looking good now they are in position.


They will look good when they are all in position and the cockpit just needs its seats to finish of the area.


The wash boards getting their first coat of undercoat and once finished will get their trims refitted and put back on the yacht.



Another busy day on the Yacht getting through the job list

The navigation station all but finished off, just a couple more items to put in this area and the job will be finished off.

The varnishing is coming along well as the coats start to build up and the depth of colour from the Mahogany coming through with its rich colour. 
 The cockpit coaming starting to go in for the final fitting and also the fitting of the aft Samson posts in their final position and they tire the aft ends of the coamings together.
